Others have the same problem: Tom Felton, for example, continues to play Draco Malfoy as an over-the-top parody of the character in the book. Rather than evocative, many of her lines come off as whiny. Many of her lines were bad to begin with - The melodramatic "I'm not an owl!" got laughs when I saw it in the theatre - and Watson's stolid delivery only makes them worse. ![]() The usually strong Emma Watson brings an awkwardly forced Hermione in Goblet of Fire. On the other hand, performances from the younger set are a mixed-bag. Older actors in the Harry Potter movies have never had much trouble with their roles, and they continue to shine here. The veteran actors are great as usual here, and new additions Brendan Gleeson as MadEye Moody and Ralph Fiennes as Lord Voldemort easily steal the movie with their few scenes. Despite the two important storylines and dozens of subplots, the pacing in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is nearly perfect. Regardless, writer Steve Kloves and director Mike Newell do a great job of fitting in the important scenes without making the events feel rushed. The book is over 700 pages and the filmmakers fit it all into 152 minutes. Yes, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire has a convoluted plot. Along the way, Hermione finds romance with a famous Quidditch player, Harry begins crushing on a witch at school, and He Who Must Not Be Named returns, meaning all sorts of stuff hits the fan. Therefore Harry must fight his way through the tournament and try to discover who would want him to enter. Meanwhile, Hogwarts and two other schools participate in the Triwizard Tournament, a dangerous contest amongst three young wizards that earns the winner, in Dumbledore's words, "eternal glory." Unfortunately for Harry, someone slipped in his name and, despite being below the age-limit, he is chosen as a Triwizard Champion. Harry Potter and friends attend the Quidditch World Cup, a tournament and international party during the course of the games, however, they suffer an attack by Death Eaters -basically, the magical equivalent of Al-Qaeda. The Movie Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is the most difficult book in the series to summarize, and it's a pleasant surprise that the filmmakers were able to so effectively fit such a complicated plot into one movie. ![]()
